50 years.
Two anniversaries.
One great excuse for a concert.

On June 29, Hevreh welcomes the legendary musical duo of Jeff Klepper and Dan Freelander and a host of talented friends to celebrate our 50th anniversary as a congregation — and theirs as Kol B'Seder — at 3 pm on stage at The Duffin Theater in Lenox, MA.

The Berkshires are Reform Judaism's summer home away from home. "Welcome Home: A Concert Celebration of Jewish Life in the Berkshires!" is an invitation to experience Jewish community, identity, and joy together, to look back on half a century with gratitude and forward with faith, resilience, and love. It's a story of our relationships with the places and music that changed the way we worship, born at a moment in 20th Century history that challenged our view of the world.
From generation to generation, whatever confronts us, music connects us. Along with Jeff and Danny, some of the leading artists and activists in contemporary Jewish music will join us at the Duffin, including Julie Silver, Peri Smilow, Doug Mishkin, Merri Lovinger Arian, and Ramie Arian, backed by a house band of Berkshire area all-stars.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Our Hevreh, Our Home capital campaign to ensure that our synagogue remains a vibrant center of Jewish life in the Berkshires for generations to come.

THE BEATLES OF CONTEMPORARY JEWISH MUSIC?!

If those songs you were singing on Friday night are still stuck in your head Sunday morning, you can thank our "Welcome Home" headliners. As Kol B’Seder, leaders and composers of new Jewish songs since the '70s, Klepper and Freelander have helped create a unique canon of American Jewish music. Once considered too radical for the bimah, their songs today are recognized as standards in many synagogue services.

And that barely scratches the surface of a catalog that covers some 200 compositions — originals and original interpretations — compiled over the past 50-plus years.

Spread by word-of-mouth and cassette tapes, Kol B’Seder’s songs became a “Jewish soundtrack” for young people at camps (the duo were on staff at Eisner Camp in the mid-‘70s), schools and synagogues worldwide.
“From the time we first met in 1971 — we were in college and teaching religious school — we enjoyed singing together, but we never imagined that our music would come to define a new Jewish sound of spirit and joy,” said Klepper.

“One commentator described us as ‘the Beatles of contemporary Jewish music',” said Freelander.
