Teen Experience at Hevreh

At Hevreh, B’Nai Mitzvah is just the beginning.

Many teens at Hevreh continue to grow as role models in Hevreh’s Religious School while participating in the madrichim program, designed to cultivate Jewish leadership and help our faculty teach in an environment set up for success.

By being a member of HoTY, teens have the opportunity to spend time in unique, teen-only, Jewish spaces and can build trust and comfort with their peers.

For more information on how teens can be involved with Hevreh, contact Jodie Friedman, teen experience coordinator.

madrich/a: from the Hebrew word “to guide” or “to lead”

Hevreh’s Madrichim Program is built for teens who have become Bar or Bat Mitzvah and are looking to continue their Jewish journey as leaders in the Religious and Hebrew School. Our madrichim are students in 8-12 grade enrolled in either the Pre-Confirmation or Confirmation class. Our madrichim not only serve as role models and guides to our younger students, but we in turn guide them in developing their teaching and leadership skills while strengthening their Jewish identity.

For more information about this program, contact Jodie Friedman.

Hevreh Temple Youth – HoTY

Open to all Jewish teenagers who have become Bar or Bat Mitzvah, HoTY brings out the best from our teens through worship, educational programs, social gatherings, service opportunities, and peer leadership.

HoTY is a temple youth group (TYG) affiliated with the North American Federation of Temple Youth–Northeast Region (NFTYNE). We are proud to support our teens in building relationships with their Jewish peers in the Berkshires, New England, across the country, and around the world.

Community Wide Havdalah: Teen Experience

Saturday, February 2 at 5 pm

at Temple Anshe Amunim in Pittsfield

Calling all 6-12 graders: HoTY (Hevreh Temple Youth) is excited to partner with our friends in central county, PFTY at Temple Anshe Amunim and USY participants at Knesset Israel, for a fun evening getting together with their Jewish peers from around the Berkshires. Together we’ll play games, eat dinner, and do a special art project. Then, we’ll join the larger Jewish Berkshires at Community Wide Havdalah which includes a special concert put on by Pizmon, the college a capella group for Jewish students at Columbia, Barnard, and Jewish Theological Seminary.

Annual HoTY Shul-In, open to Berkshire Jewish teens

Saturday, February 2 at 8:00 pm-Sunday, February 3 at 8:30 am

At the conclusion of Community Wide Havdalah at Anshe on February 2, anyone in 8-12 grade who has become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is invited to take a bus from Temple Anshe Amunim to Hevreh for the annual HoTY Shul-In. Teens will hang out and sleep at the temple, and be together until pickup at 8:30 am on February 3.

Teens are expected to bring everything they need to spend the night, including a sleeping bag and pillow, pajamas, a change of clothing for the next day, toiletries, and medication.

The cost for food, staff, and riding the bus is $18 per teen.
Parents must grant permission by electronically filling out and signing the waiver. Contact  Jodie Friedman to acquire the form.

Continuing Education

After becoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah, our 8th grade Pre-Confirmation seminar promotes critical thinking and gets middle schoolers ready for the transition to high school. Our 9-12 grade Confirmation seminar further delves into conversation surrounding the intersection between Judaism and being a teenager, and promotes collaboration with near-peer groups.

Highlights of our five-year post-B’Nai Mitzvah teen curriculum include:

  • Pre-Confirmation B’Nai Tzedek Youth Awards Grant Giving Program
  • Pre-Confirmation trip to Israel
  • Confirmation class creating and putting on the annual Purimshpiel
  • Pre-Confirmation partnering with the 7th grade B’Nai Mitzvah class to put on the annual Purim Carnival
  • Confirmation trip (four year rotation) to Prague, a Jewish heritage trip in the south, Amsterdam, and a L’Taken Seminar run by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC)
